Programming Rule

February 28, 2013

As Dave Winer says, this really is a fundamental rule, but one we often forget.

Don’t slog away at the end of the day…

Under Manhattan

February 22, 2013

The MTA released photos of the digging underground to connect the Long Island Railroad to Grand Central Station. This is a huge project that improve a ton of folks’ commutes.

The pictures are amazing. Check out the slideshow.

A or A?

February 21, 2013

Tim Bray is a software developer. Among other things he was one of the prominent authors of the XML specification. He has a blog that is nicely sparse. Posts are as often about software development as about photography.

He took a gig a Google in 2010, so there’s some pro-Google bias to his blog, but not much.

His latest post is a look at his thoughts when people ask him if they should go Apple or Android. The basic conclusion is, “eh, matters less and less”.

Oh, and he’s very into Ingress.

Drilling on Mars

February 20, 2013

We are so blasé. Seriously, that title should require a qualifier, “not really”. Except we are really doing this.

Honestly, it’s a bit ridiculous. We dropped a one ton rover on an exact location on Mars. This rover is moving around the planet, sending real time images back to us. The damn thing is tweeting. Oh, ho hum, we have something on Mars. What about Kim Kardashians’s baby?

Holy crap, do you realize how hard this was to do?

Anyway, for those bored with the above, please don’t notice that we will be analyzing rocks drills on Mars. Rocks on Mars, how boring…

Culture Does, Policy Says

Pretty obvious stuff from 37 Signals, but if it were that obvious why would we have Dilbert?…

Go IU

February 19, 2013

You have to be a long time reader of this blog to know I’m an Indiana University alum (School of Music for those scoring at home). Indiana has always been a basketball school, but we’ve gone through a long dry spell.

I’m old, so I was there for Bob Knight’s last national championship. I was at the final game (in the worst nose bleed seats possible) when Keith Smart hit the shot to beat Syracuse in ‘87.

But the past few years there hasn’t been much to cheer about. Last year the hope began, and suddenly this year Indiana is the real deal again.

Tonight’s win against Michigan State was huge. We haven’t won at Michigan State in ages. The team is fun to watch, and coach Crean has done a fantastic job pulling the program back to national prominence.

And I can be a college basketball fan again. Life is good.
