Happy 135th Birthday

While I’m obviously biased, the Brooklyn Bridge is the coolest bridge in the world and the story of its construction is fascinating. Washington Roebling fell ill from what was then called Caisson Disease but is now simply referred to as the bends, and his wife took over. In 1883. Not sure about the rooster…

Emily Warren Roebling—who was instrumental in guiding construction after her husband and chief engineer Washington Roebling fell ill—was the first to walk across it. On the 135th anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge, my favorite pic remains Eugene de Salignac's 1914 shot. He worked for the city's Dept of Bridges and had a wonderful eye.
